Why take Vitamin D supplement?

Health Canada recommends all breastfed infants to supplement with vitamin D. While breast milk is the best source for the nutrients your baby needs for healthy development, it contains only small amounts of vitamin D. Although our bodies can produce vitamin D from the sun, production is inadequate during winter months, particularly in Canada. It is not advised to expose infants to direct sunlight without protection, such as clothing and sunscreen; however, this blocks the formation of vitamin D. Infants with dark skin pigmentation also have difficulty producing enough vitamin D from the sun. Additionally, very few foods naturally contain vitamin D, making it difficult for your baby to reach optimal levels once foods are introduced.

How much vitamin D does my baby need?

The Canadian Paediatric Society and Health Canada advise all breastfed infants receive 400 IU of Vitamin D from birth. Infants living in northern Canada are advised to supplement with 800 IU of Vitamin D daily. Children and adolescents are advised to consume 400 IU of Vitamin D through food and/or supplements.
